Irina Gheorghe, Methods for the Study of What Is Not There, 2019. Inkjet print from medium format negative, 50x50.

Preliminary Remarks on the Study of What Is Not There set the ground for the exploration of the unobservable. Of all the things which are not there, which are the ones which are, and which are the ones which are not? How many things are there, which are not there, and what are the most appropriate methods to approach them? The performance draws a map of all the things which are not present in the space of the Grazer Kunstverein, from things which are to things which are not, from things which could be to things which could not be. It develops as a guided tour through this map, of which both the space and the viewers become part.

Irina Gheorghe (b. 1981 in Târgoviște, Romania) works primarily with performance, in combination with installation, collage, photography or video, to address the tensions inherent in the attempts to speak about things beyond our possibilities of observation, from extraterrestrial life to hypothetical planets. Irina has also been working with Alina Popa as part of the artist duo The Bureau of Melodramatic Research to investigate how passions shape contemporary society, as well as our affective relationship to an unhuman universe.
